IN THE LINE OF DUTY

Each year firefighters around the country and around the world, give the supreme sacrifice to their communities, their departments, and to their fellow firefighters. Although some incidents, like September 11, 2001 at the World Trade Center in NYC, or December 3, 1999 at the Worcester Cold Storage Building in Worcester, Massachusetts are forever burned into our minds because of the overwhelming grief they have caused the fire service and the world, we must also remember the smaller community and the firefighter in those communities who have also given that sacrifice in the line of duty.

Worcester Firefighter Timothy P. Jackson, one of the six Worcester Firefighters who perished on that December day in 1999 was a member of Massachusetts Chapter 4 of the Red Knights. The New York City Fire Riders also lost a number of their members at the WTC when 343 of their brothers and sisters perished on that fateful day.

May they and and all their comrades who answer the last call rest in peace.

for all of us who are members in emergency service

The following are words by Father Mychal Judge, Chaplain for the FDNY.  Father Judge perished at the WTC on September 11, 2001 while tending to an injured firefighter.

"Good days, bad days, but never a boring day on this job.
You do what God called you to do.
You show up, you put one foot in front of the other,
and you do your job, which is a mystery and a surprise.
You have no idea, when you get in the rig, what God is calling you to do.
But he needs you....... so keep going.
Keep supporting each other.
Be kind to each other.
Love each other.
Work together.
You love the job.
We all do.
What a blessing that is."

1933-2001

A tribute to a friend

The last time I'll see your face,
As the piper pipes Amazing Grace.

A new recruit will take my place,
Beside my friends to fill this space.

I go to rest with God my Chief,
No more to see the strife and grief.

I leave to you my words of prayer,
To those who fight, I pray take care.

The job you've chosen now to do,
Will keep them safe, it's up to you.

I go to rest with God my Chief,
No more to see the strife and grief.

Standing tall and staying strong,
When all else fails, you will go on.

In his faith we can go on,
A Firefighter standing tall and strong.

I go to rest with God my Chief,
No more to see the strife and grief.

I go to rest with God my Chief,
My family safe in his love and peace.

Firefighters' Prayer

When I am called to duty, God
Wherever fires may rage
Give me the strength to save some life
whatever be its age,
Help me embrace a little child
before it is too late
or save an older person
from the horror of that fate,
Enable me to be alert and hear the weakest shout,
and quickly and efficiently to put the fire out,
I want to fill my calling
and to give the best in me
to guard my every neighbor
and protect their property,
And if according to your will
I have to loose my life,
Please bless with your protecting hand
my children and my wife.

I Am a firefighter's Wife

The table is set, the meal is prepared, our guest will soon arrive
My husband once more disappears, in the hopes of keeping a child alive

While waiting at home alone, our plans having gone away
My first impulse is to merely sit right down and cry

But soon again I realize the importance of my life
When I agreed to take on the duties of being a firefighter's wife

While there are many drawback's, I'll take them in stride
Knowing "My Daddy saved a life" our children can say with pride

The gusting winds and raging flames, may be his final fate
But with God's help I can remain my firefighter's faithful mate
